January-March newsletter

PUSH-CCC Newsletter

⏱ Estimated reading time: 3 min Edition: January-March 2026

Introduction

In a constantly evolving energy landscape, advances in large-scale energy storage are crucial for the transition towards a more sustainable future. During January-March 2026, we have witnessed significant developments in storage technologies, particularly in the field of compressed air (CAES and AA-CAES). These advances not only reflect the results of innovative research but also highlight the need for a regulatory framework to support their implementation. In this context, the PUSH-CCC project continues to lead the way in the research and development of ACAES technologies, contributing to the decarbonisation of Europe.

Closing: The Importance of Long-Duration Storage

Long-duration storage capacity is essential for the decarbonisation of Europe. As renewable energies continue to grow, the need for efficient and economic storage solutions becomes critical. Technologies such as CAES not only present a viable alternative to electrochemical batteries but also contribute to grid stability and the reduction of reliance on fossil fuels. In this context, PUSH-CCC positions itself as a key player in the research and development of technologies that will facilitate the transition towards a more sustainable energy system.

PUSH-CCC will be at #FTW2026

The 2026 edition of Future Tech Week (FTW) is taking place from January 19th to 23rd, 2026 – mark your calendars!

FTW 2026 will once again bring together innovators, researchers, and key stakeholders for a week dedicated to collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and networking. Designed as a platform for deep- tech projects, this event provides an opportunity to showcase achievements, foster meaningful connections, and stimulate synergies among EIC-funded projects, external experts, and the broader research and innovation community.

As part of FTW 2026, our Consortium RIEGOSUR, S.A., UNIVERSIDAD DE SEVILLA (USE), INSTITUTO TECNOLOGICO DE CANARIAS,S.A. (ITC), ETHNICON METSOVION POLYTECHNION (NTUA), POLITECNICO DI TORINO (POLITO) and UNIVERSITA DEGLI STUDI DI BRESCIA (UNIBS), are hosting an event on 23 Jan 2026, 10:00-10:30. This event will focus on a presentation of the EIC funded PUSH-CCC Project “PUSHING THE LIMITS OF LARGE-SCALE ENERGY STORAGE: Optimized Combined Cycle CAES”, and our vision of how this technology could become a key enabler of Europe’s energy transition, helping to maximize the impact of investments under the European Green Deal and support

Submission of Mining Project Authorization

We are thrilled to announce that we have finally submitted the mining project for authorisation! It has been a very long journey to reach this point. In order to define the mining works, we first had to design the experimental plant layout and undertake detailed civil engineering design. This was a significant challenge due to several confluent factors:

· Being a first-of-its-kind plant with severe operating conditions and great difficulty in locating suitable materials and construction procedures
· Being on La Gomera island, which has presented us with significant logistical challenges.
· Managing our budget for experimentation with both our initial 65 bar plant layout and our supercritical plant layout.
· Intending to reach TRL5 with our experimentation and demonstrate our significantly increased energy density with our new plant layout.
· Having to deal with an interdisciplinary design including mining, civil engineering, equipment, installations and control.

This is a major project for a pre-designed experimental plant capable of conducting experiments at 65 and 120 bar. The details of the civil engineering works have also been designed.
